An Introduction to Data Structures

Data structures are ways of storing and organizing data in a computer. They range from small structures such as variables and arrays to larger ones such as segment trees and balanced trees.

Programs cannot run without data structures. Different data structures have different strengths and weaknesses and can handle different problems. Choosing an appropriate data structure for a particular problem can therefore greatly improve a program's efficiency. For this reason, it is essential to study a wide variety of data structures.
